June 17, 2016: Exhibit Openings and More (Event Gallery)

On Friday evening, June 17, the area around Plaza Angel witnessed the opening of three (well, make it two-and-half) art exhibitions centered around the eruption of Mount Pinatubo 25 years before, as well as an evening program of reminiscences and performances. Here are some images captured by KnowAngeles.

We began the evening in the Angeles City Library and Information Center for the exhibit called "Tula Kaibat na ning Lua" (Joy after Tears) by Gamat Kapampangan.

Ms Cecile Yumul, close-up eyewitness to many of
the events of that fateful time, served as
Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Here,
she greets guests in the Library lobby
before the ribbon-cutting.

Next, we moved to the Library's second floor to view the artworks.

Two students from Angeles City National
Trade School view some of the works.

"Balen Pinu ku Tuig ka Kanaku"
by Jevi Joe B. Vitug
Oil on Canvas, 4ft by 5ft

"Sa Paglipas ng Unos, mat Bagong Umaga"
by Leonardo C. Tulabut
Oil on Canvas, 48" x 60"

We then moved on to the Museo ning Angeles for two events: Artruption 2016, by Edille Paras; and Abu ning Kapasalamatan ("Ashes of Thanksgiving") by Herminigildo C. Pineda.

Again Ms Cecile Yumul kicked things off, this
time to a larger gathering in the Museo's lobby.

"Artruption" is an installation of flowers
by Edille Paras. Mr. Paras said it took
him and an assistant about two hours to
construct, and was "ephemeral," expected to
last only two or three days.

("Ashes of Thanksgiving") by Herminigildo C. Pineda.

Finally, the program Revisiting Agyu Tamu (We Can!): Turning Tragedy into Triumph 25 Years Thereafter featuring speeches and performances. Ms Cecile Yumul again served as emcee.

Mayor Ed Pamintuan reminisced during the program

Aeta performers played, sang, and danced

Aeta communities occupying the slopes
of the mountain were the first to note
its unusual behavior.

After some Aetas returned, they were given the first clear
legal title to their own land ever granted by the government.

But as GMA News online reported in 2012,
"Two decades after the eruption of Mount
Pinatubo, the Aetas remain in need of help."

The next few images are of several performances by Peter De
Vera's exquisite dance troupe Sinukwan Kapampangan.

The Mayor, city staff, and special guests gather for a final photo.
